Does anyone know if high bilirubin is linked to Multiple Sclerosis?

I have been very sick for a long time and my doctor told me there is a possibility that I may have MS. I am going to be tested within the next month, but I also just had a blood test that says everything is normal except bilirubin. My expected range is between 0.2-1.2 and I am higher at 2.1. Is MS linked to bilirubin in some way or should I be concerned about something else? Thank you so much in advance!!

Well MS is more of a nervous system dysfunction. Blood tests can not even give a definite diagnosis for such only neurological tests or MRI.Bilirubin in the other hand is concerning the liver. You have high bilirubin probably because of some medicines you take for MS. Check your medicines, specially paracetamol and steriods. But dont be bothered too much because if your liver is affected other tests like ALP, A/G ratio will also increase dramatically. Thats the time you should be worried of a liver problem.But for now, you have to be more concern of managing your MS because the parts involved are way more important your brain,spinal cord and nerves. Reply:I don't think it is. I haven't heard anything about it. I know bilrubin is linked to other things, like i think hearing loss or some kind of liver disorder. In Asian medicine, the Spleen (disfunction) is associated with MS. Don't ask me how. In the Western world Lack of Vitamin D has been linked to MS, lack of sunlight, pesticides, recessive genes, etc. Go to the Canadian MS Society Webpage.


Side Note: There was this guy named the "Sleeping Prophet", his name was Edgar Cayce. Go to his web page or google him. He had things to say about MS, he said it was a lack of gold in the body.

Reply:No, I don't think bilirubin is linked to MS. MS is in your family somewhere if you have it because it is aquired from ancestry, it is not contagious or anything but it goes through genes. It usually skips a generation so you would have to go back to your great grandmother/father or maybe even great great grandparents. And your children shouldn't have it if you do. What are your symptoms?? My mom goes through bad eye sight or even loss of eye sight at times, if it's really bad, she can't feel hot and cold and it comes and goes. Stress brings it on and her whole right side goes numb. Also pregnancy helps it get better too.


And bilirubin is when it gets to high, your skin will start to turn yellow, called jaundice.
Reply:i dont think bilirubin has anything to do with it. When my mum got diagnosed the doctors said she was just unlucky or something and they didnt say anything about getting MS because of the bilirubin. Since then my mum has deterioated and now she can't do anything. Her first symptoms were tripping and bad eyesight but now its fully bad escpecially because shes got 2 other diseases from a young age. Shes really unlucky but i hope you don't get a bad experience from MS.





also doctors told us that the MS isn't genetic. but i think there still is a chance for me and my brother to get it maybe. also most people that get MS are tend to be in warm climates ie: near the equator.

...but the most obvious is if you had suffered a large bruise...





...next obvious is a form of Hepatitis





...or there is something called Gilbert's syndrome that is associated with benign elevation of indirect bilirubin when done fasting.





....You maybe taking a medicine that raises the bilirubin level in your blood.





.....You may have an infection.





....you may have biliary tract disease such as gallstones.





...You may have a blood problem, such as anemia.





...Liver problems can also cause an elevated bilirubin....

Reply:It is possible. Bilirubin is a breakdown product of heme (the iron containing rings in myoblobin and hemoglobin, amongst other proteins). Usually bilirubin is elevtated when the liver is stressed, and high circulating bilirubin leads to jaundice. However, some researchers have noted an increase of heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) in response to the attack on the nervous system(s) in MS. This would, as the cells break down, cause an increase in heme breakdown, and bilirubin production.





Some suggest that elevated bilirubin is not necessarily a bad thing - it does have antioxidant properties, and thus may help protect the cell. However, it is usually an indication that something serious is wrong.
