I have recently gotten a new screen name and linked it to my old one. To have the same "buddies" on both lists do I need to retype all the ones from my old screen name to my new screen name's buddy list even though they are linked??

You can simply save the buddy list, and then load it on the second screen name. Under "My AIM", select "Save Buddy List..." Sign-off, log in (not linked log in) to your second SN, and then repeat the above, selecting "Load Buddy List..." this time. Then, set up your linked-SNs as you did before.
