suppose an animal is heterozygous AaBb, and the traits are not linked. When meiosis occurs, what is the total number if possible combinations of gametes that can be made for these traits?

The traits are not linked means they are placed on the chromosome at a distance or may be on two different chromosomes. Therefore they can be segregated during meiosis. Heterozygous animal represented by Aa Bb means it is heterozygous for both the traits . The possible gamete formations are therefore AB , Ab , aB, ab.
Reply:I agree that there are four possible combinations of gametes. Use the FOIL method, just like in algebra, to find all the possible gametes.

AaBb

First a and b: AB

Inner a and b: aB

Outer a and b: AB

Last a and b: ab
Reply:4

They are:

AB

Ab

aB

ab
