To fellow Pagans...I need three nocturnal animals whose symbolism is linked with the moon, preferably...?

I love creating Pagan-based art work and am currently working on a Pagan/medieval watercolor illustration. The description: There is a banner flowing behind a large Moon (old man in the Moon image.) On the banner it says in illuminated letters "Once in a blue moon." The background and borders around the picture are all done with medieval motifs. It looks good but it needs three animals/insects to fill in some space. To fit in with the theme they need to be nocturnal and preferrably somehow symbolically linked with the moon. I was thinking an owl, luna moth and perhaps rabbit, but I'm not sure if the rabbit is symbolic in any way with the moon. Any other suggestions?

I heard this on rabbits -- sounds like what you're after I think.

"In many mythic traditions, these animals were archetypal symbols of femininity, associated with the lunar cycle, fertility, longevity, and rebirth.

In some lands, Hare is the messenger of the Great Goddess, moving by moonlight between the human world and the realm of the gods.

The association of rabbits, hares, and the moon can be found in numerous cultures the world over — ranging from Japan to Mexico, from Indonesia to the British Isles. Whereas in Western folklore we refer to the "Man in the Moon," the "Hare (or Rabbit) in the Moon" is a more familiar symbol in other societies. In Egyptian myth, hares were also closely associated with the cycles of the moon."

rabbits are the familiar of the goddess ostara
Reply:The rabbit is indeed connected to the moon, and would not be a bad choice at all.

Reply:Wolves, bats and Panthers
Reply:use a wolf.
Reply:Well, you'd think the obvious choice would be a wolf. As for the rabbit, the rabbit in the moon is what they say in Japan instead of man in the moon. I think that there's a story to go with it too. I can't remember it though.
Reply:wolf

I love wolves. :)

Whohoo! Go wolves!! You have a lot of votes for it. Hehe
Reply:Wolf, Bat and Deer. (deer are far more nocturnal than diurnal)
Reply:Wolf, moth, owl. For some reason I've never understood, I've always associated the whale with the moon, too.
