How are the biblical creatures Behemoth and Leviathan linked with Satan?

I have come to know that the creatures named in the bible as Behemoth and Leviathan are linked with Satan. I have even heard that the Behemoth was seen as a direct incarnation of Satan in Hebrew lore. Yet, I cannot find anything that affirms this in the bible. How was it determined that these creatures would be synonymous with Satan? Also, did the mythical bird Ziz and the Tanniyn end up with the same associations? I have also heard that God instructed his followers to slay the female Leviathan and take it as food for the masses. Did this leave the male one hungry for vengeance in some way? Did the Behemoth take on the same desire after god saw it grow out of control? All perspectives welcome as usual.

Reply:The Satan of the Old Testament is very different from the Satan that modern day Christians fear and fight against. The word "Satan" in Hebrew means "one who opposes, obstructs, or acts as adversary". In the Old Testament, "Satan" is one of God's faithful servants. He is an angel! He obstructs the road in front of Balaam in the Book of Numbers and he puts Job through his miseries. He is one of God's own! You won't find any associations with "Satan" and the snake in the Garden, Leviathan or Behemoth in the OT because there aren't any.





The face of Satan, who and what he is and was, changes radically as the religion spread across the continent and cross-culturally. For more information on this, pick up a copy of "The Origin of Satan" by Elaine Pagels. She's a Professor of Religion at Princeton University and is acknowledged worldwide as a creditable Bible Scholar.

Reply:RE: Leviathan, read Isaiah 27:1, which is undoubtedly a reference to Satan's defeat in Revelation 20:1-3. Overall, then, Leviathan may be a possible reference to Satan, depending upon the context. For example, the references to Leviathan in Job do not, to my view, reference Satan, while Isaiah 27 does.





RE: Leviathan being slain and given as food, read Psalm 74:14. I'm not sure this is a reference to Satan, though.

1) I've *NEVER* heard this story. I would not give too much credit to this.


2) there are alot of stories that are taken with varying degrees of seriousness, for example the story of lillith is just about entirely non-bibical, but can be taken very seriously by many people.


3) Also remember that "Satan" in Judaism and the OT is NOT the devil or some "evil" thing but a role for an angel, under God's command. kinda the prosecuting atourney(but with better spelling)
Reply:I'd suggest talking with a Jew. Jews do not believe Satan is a being... Ha Satan/the Advesary/Accuser... is something that is inside ALL people. That selfish part of us all... not a separate entity.





Behemoth is a large land animal... usually rhino's, elephants, etc... and Leviathan were supposed to be whales and other large mammals and fish in the oceans and seas.





Sounds to me like some people are not getting enough oxygen to their brains (if they have any)

Sorry, there's nothing whatsoever in the Bible to support that position, nor in any extraBiblical works I'm aware of.

Reply:If it's not in the Bible, take it with a pinch of salt. God left us all we need to know. I believe they were what we now call dinosaurs.

Reply:yes it could be they sound like dragons to me before the flood of Noah one third of the angels in heaven were upon the face of the earth the had sex with daughters of man there offspring were the giants Goliath was one of them these fallen angels who came with Satan are now demons. it is very possible that these creatures came to earth with Satan.

Leviathan is I believe talking about a so-called mythical creature.

Did you know that it talks about Dragons, Unicorns, and


Satyrs in Isaiah. KJV.


It says in Romans, "When they knew God, they worshipped Him


not as God, and became vain in thier imaginings, and turned


the incorruptible image of God, (the spirit form), into the corruptible image of MAN AND BEASTS!"


And when God "supposedly" destroyed the Earth with the Flood,


(I think it was a natural disaster). It says He cursed ALL FLESH, because He was sorry He made them.
