Noise!- is not being able to tolerate silence linked to any sort of pathology?

I love silence. I need it. I seek it. I do not understand people who cannot tolerate the silence of the woods, or be alone with their own thoughts. In my very, very limited experience, the people I've known who need constant noise stimulation are very disordered. Their lives were a mess. Literally. One (a former husband of a family member) had girlfriends in 5 states, for example. Has anyone else run into this phenomenon (not the multiple GF's LOL but the need for constant noise)? Are you one of them? Do you have a rational explanantion? is it a phobia?

Or, do you have any professional experience that supports the need for down-time from constant distraction? Is inability to tolerate silence known to be linked to any mental disorders or illnesses?

Noise!- is not being able to tolerate silence linked to any sort of pathology?
I also need the stillness of silence.

I think the people that always have to have outside stimulation are not comfortable enough in their own skin.

Maybe these people get kind of spaced out if there is nothing to keep their senses stimulated.

I find it exhausting to have too much going on at one time.
Reply:Hey. We have something in common.

I love silence too, no people, green meadow, and be with myself.

but it's normal, (If not then I should be in a mental ward rite bout now)

and try to tolerate, I mean pretend you don't care. You can't avoid these kind of things in life.
Reply:Without a doubt, i need silence to

function. Everywhere i go seems to

be chaotic, and people don't seem

to realize the cause of

this unorderness is mainly from the

fact that they take no time to retreat

from everything for a while, and just

listen to the sound of... well, nothing.

It's honestly something that i value.

Being able to just sit alone, and think

is wonderful.

If i don't have it, i feel scattered and

irritated.

I don't see any reason why one would

have a phobia of silence. i mean, it's

like having a fearness of tranquility.

no one would have a fear of that ! i

think some people are just different, and

prefer the type of lifestyle that is very fast

pace, and don't need to take time and

just remove themselves from things for

a bit for just themselves. it's always good

to have a balance of both worlds, and

take time to enjoy the silence, but also

experience the social, loud occurences.
