Any ideas on converting multiple linked .xls files to excel 2007 .xlsx file type?

My finance department has 100s of linked excel 2003 files .xls and they need to convert them to excel 2007 .xlsx. Is there a way this can be done? You think Microsoft would have thought of this before changing there stupid file extension for Office 2007. Any help would be appreciated!

Any ideas on converting multiple linked .xls files to excel 2007 .xlsx file type?
There is really nothing wrong to leave those 100s of files in 2003 formats. But if you really want to change them to 2007, here is how.

You open the master file which links many other files into it, you do a "global" replacement of ".xls" to ".xlsx" (quotes are used here only for illustration). Excel will find each link in your current file and change the linked file name to .xlsx. It will then go to the directory to check if the .xlsx file is there. So this will give you an opportunity to create the .xlsx version for that linked file.

Be careful with the global replacement. You do not want to, by accident, convert .xlsx to .xlsxx. Back up all your files before try this.

Good luck.

basically allows Office bellow 2007 to read 2007 files, then if you want them in 2003 format just save in 2003 format or if your using say office 2003 just hit save and it saves them in 2003 format.
Reply:try going to the folder with the file, right clicking on the file and selecting "open with"
