If A woman's father has a sex linked disease, does that make the woman a carrier?

7th Grade Science Question III

If A woman's father has a sex linked disease, does that make the woman a carrier

If A woman's father has a sex linked disease, does that make the woman a carrier?
Yes. The father has the sex-linked trait on his X chromosome, which his daughters all receive, so they are carriers.
Reply:no

well Zim, what diseases might those be if it is possible???
Reply:do you mean sex linked disease as in sexually transfered or gender linked?

if you mean the former then maybe, if the woman does not have any symptoms of this disease, and you need to make sure that the disease can be transfered through births, like aids.

but if its the latter, then no.
Reply:Possibly yes,

all depends on what the disease is !!!
Reply:not exactly it doesent have to do with being male or female just how your body is some people could be carriers and some not you have to get every one envolved tested because you can still pass it on
Reply:If we are talking about hemophilia then the woman is a carrier. Hemophilia has a X-linked inheritance. The father would have one defective X chromosome so would have the disease. The woman would have one normal and one defective X-chromosome. The normal one would make up for the defective one and she would not have the disease.
Reply:Yes it does.

If it is a sex-linked genetic disease, then the gene is present on the X chromosome.

A daughter automatically receives her father's X chromosome (sons get the Y chromosome), therefore she will automatically receive the trait.

The only way she can be anything other than a carrier would be if her mother was also a carrier (or displayed the disease, having it on both her X chromosomes).

If this was the case, then there is a chance that the daughter would inherit the disease from both parents, and would be a sufferer, not a carrier.
Reply:no not at all, no diease frm the father can be transmitted, only dieases frm the mother will b transmitted to the offspring..

PS: just had this bio class last week! hope i helped :)
